Well Teen Visits

Adolescent Pediatric Appointments

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, adolescents (ages 13-21) should have a minimum of one routine doctor visit per year, the well teen physical appointment. These visits are to ensure your child is healthy and developing normally, and to address any concerns or questions you have. At well teen visits any illnesses or problems can be caught early and treated more easily at an early stage. Many teens visit the doctor more frequently, as they may have specific health concerns or be participating in sports or other activities that put them at risk for injury. During these appointments, your doctor will focus on the specific issue or concern that you have for your teen. These visits are problem focused and do not count as complete annual physical exams.

Common health concerns for adolescents

Adolescence is a time of physical and emotional transformation, when youngsters grow from children into adults. Along with these changes come a number of common health concerns. Many teens suffer from acne, due to hormonal changes and increased oil production. Others become more susceptible to colds and other illnesses, as their immune systems mature. In addition, adolescents often experience aches and pains, as they grow taller and their bones and muscles adjust to the new stresses placed on them. Emotionally, teens may struggle with anxiety and depression, as they navigate the challenges of adolescence. However, by eating healthy foods, getting enough exercise, and getting regular check-ups, teens can develop Healthy Habits that will benefit them throughout adulthood. We’re here to assist your child throughout their development into adulthood, and offer well teen visits, as well as sick visits.

It is important to schedule your appointment with a doctor who has experience treating adolescent patients. Adolescent medicine specialists are trained to provide much needed care for your teen during this challenging time.

What to expect at your first appointment

Just as your teen is changing, the well teen appointment becomes an extended visit when compared to a well child visit. Please allow at least an hour to complete the visit. Here is what to expect during the appointment. First, the doctor will likely ask about your child’s medical history and any current concerns you have. This is your chance to share any information that may be relevant to their health.vNext, the doctor may order some tests. These tests can help to identify any underlying health problems. Finally, the doctor will develop a treatment plan based on your individual needs. Whether you’re seeing a doctor for a routine checkup or a specific concern, this appointment is an opportunity to get to know your doctor and ensure that you’re receiving the best possible care. The doctor will also provide your teen with “private time” during the appointment to discuss any concerns or questions they may have.
