Breast Cancer Awareness Month: A Message for Moms from Our Pediatric Practice

As we observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, we want to take a moment, as a pediatric practice, to recognize the health and well-being of mothers. While our primary focus is on the health of children, we also deeply understand that a healthy mom is essential to the strength and happiness of any family. Moms play a crucial role in our children’s lives, and this month serves as an important reminder for mothers to prioritize their own health, especially when it comes to breast cancer awareness.

The Importance of Breast Health for Moms

Breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers among women in the United States, with an estimated 1 in 8 women developing the disease over their lifetime. Early detection through routine self-exams and regular screenings can be lifesaving. We encourage mothers to stay vigilant about their health, for themselves and their families.

Recommendations for Breast Self-Exams and Professional Screenings

Knowing what to look for and establishing a routine can empower mothers to detect potential issues early. Here’s a guide on how to stay proactive:

Monthly Self-Exams: It’s recommended that women begin monthly self-exams starting in their 20s. The best time to perform a self-exam is about a week after the menstrual cycle ends when breasts are less likely to be swollen or tender. During a self-exam, it’s essential to feel for lumps or unusual thickening and to look for any visible changes in shape or appearance.

Clinical Breast Exams: Women in their 20s and 30s should schedule a clinical breast exam with a healthcare professional every 1 to 3 years. For women over 40, it’s recommended to have a clinical breast exam and a mammogram annually. Regular exams and mammograms are the most reliable methods of early detection, significantly improving outcomes for women diagnosed with breast cancer.

Resources in Fulton County for Low-Cost or Free Breast Exams

We understand that financial concerns can be a barrier to scheduling these essential exams. Fortunately, there are resources in Fulton County, Georgia, that can provide support to women who may need assistance:

  1. 1. Fulton County Public Health Clinics: Many public health clinics in Fulton County offer breast exams and other women’s health services on a sliding fee scale or even free, depending on income. Contacting the Fulton County Board of Health is an excellent first step for information on nearby clinics.
  1. 2. Breast Cancer Prevention Programs: The Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (BCCP) through the Georgia Department of Public Health provides breast and cervical cancer screenings to women who meet eligibility criteria, including uninsured or underinsured women. This program is designed to help ensure that financial obstacles don’t prevent mothers from accessing potentially life-saving exams.
  1. 3. Local Nonprofits: Organizations like the Georgia Breast Cancer Coalition Fund (GBCCF) work to support Georgia women by connecting them with local resources. These nonprofits can often provide additional information and financial assistance to make mammograms and breast exams more affordable.

Our hearts are with any of our patient families who have experienced breast cancer firsthand. Please know that you’re in our thoughts.

October is a reminder that self-care isn’t selfish – it’s essential, for you and your family.
