Your First Prenatal Appointment: What to Expect

Congratulations on your pregnancy! If this is your first time pregnant, you may be wondering what to expect at your first prenatal appointment. This blog post will walk you through the basics of what to bring to your appointment, what will happen during the visit, and some questions you should ask your doctor.

Scheduling Your First Prenatal Appointment

Once you’ve had a chance to let the news sink in and celebrate your pregnancy with your partner, friends, and family, it will be time to schedule your first prenatal appointment. Women will typically have their first prenatal visit between 6 and 12 weeks. It’s important to note that providers sometimes have a wait time for appointment availability, so even though your appointment may take place in the second month of pregnancy, we recommend that you call as soon as you discover your pregnancy to get that appointment on our calendar and yours.

The Importance of Prenatal Visits for Pregnant Women

Prenatal visits are important for both the mother and the baby. During a prenatal visit, the doctor will check on the health of the mother and the baby, and will answer any questions that the parents may have. The doctor may also recommend tests or treatments during a prenatal visit.

At your initial visit, your provider will likely do a complete physical exam, order routine bloodwork and urine tests, discuss your medical history and any risk factors for complications during pregnancy, answer any questions or concerns you may have, and give you information on what to expect during your pregnancy.

This is also a great opportunity for you to get to know your provider and ask any questions about their experience caring for pregnant women. After this initial visit, you will likely have prenatal appointments every 4-6 weeks until 28-32 weeks gestation, when appointments will likely increase to every 2-3 weeks until delivery.

Preparing for your first prenatal visit

A prenatal visit is an important time for a woman to connect with her doctor and ensure that she and her baby are on track for a healthy pregnancy. There are some things that women can do to prepare for their prenatal visit:

1. Make a list of any questions or concerns that you have about your pregnancy.

2. Write down any symptoms that you have been experiencing.

3. Have your insurance information handy.

4. Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment, so you can give a good urine sample.

5. Wear comfortable clothing that allows your doctor to easily access your stomach and pelvic area.

6. Bring along a support person, if you would like.

7. Arrive early so you have plenty of time to fill out any necessary paperwork.

After that initial prenatal appointment, it is important for women to continue seeing their doctor regularly. This will help ensure a healthy pregnancy and birth. Women should also follow their doctor’s recommendations for diet and exercise, and take any prenatal vitamins prescribed. Pregnancy comes with a lot of changes, but it’s important not to worry. Use your healthcare provider and other resources as you journey through this wonderful time in life!
